The Scholar and Philosopher

Zhu Xi was a Chinese philosopher, historian, politician, poet, and calligrapher of the Southern Song dynasty. Born in Fujian, he was a leading figure in the development of Neo-Confucianism, seeking to integrate moral self-cultivation, classical interpretation, ritual practice, and cosmological theory into a coherent framework. His intellectual work emphasized disciplined study and ethical cultivation, particularly through a methodology known as the "investigation of things."

Throughout his life, Zhu Xi served multiple times as a government official, including a period as the Prefect of Nankang Military District, where he revived the White Deer Grotto Academy. He was a prolific writer and editor, having compiled and edited almost a hundred books. His extensive commentaries on the Four Books eventually became the core texts for the imperial civil service examinations.

Calligraphy and Artistry

Beyond his philosophical contributions, Zhu Xi was a practitioner of calligraphy. He was trained in the style of Cao Cao and later specialized in the regular script of Zhong Yao and the running cursive script of Yan Zhenqing. His brush strokes are described as smooth, round, steady, and flowing, characterized by a sense of stability and elegance. He was particularly skillful in both running and cursive scripts, especially when executing large characters.

His extant calligraphic works consist primarily of short written notes in running script. One of his recognized masterpieces is the Thatched Hut Hand Scroll, a work in running-cursive script. This scroll contains 102 characters by Zhu Xi and includes postscripts from various scholars of the Song and Ming dynasties.
