A Life in Color and Form

Born in Leeuwarden on December 25, 1880, Gerhardus Bernardus Josephus Westermann lived a life deeply connected to the visual rhythms of the Netherlands. His path as an artist began with formal training at the Rijksacademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. There, he studied under Johannes Hendricus Jurres and August Allebé, absorbing the techniques that would later define his approach to the canvas. He was a man of many talents, working as a painter, watercolorist, draftsman, and illustrator.

Westermann’s creative spirit often wandered through themes of history and romance. He found inspiration in the quiet strength of horses and riders, the structured beauty of Amsterdam cityscapes, and the stillness of still lifes. His work frequently touched upon expressionism, using strong colors and shapes to bring his subjects to life. Sometimes, he even sought a different identity for his creations, working under the pseudonym Johs. Labasky.

Olympic Recognition and Academic Legacy

One of the most notable moments in Westermann's career occurred on the international stage in 1932. During the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, he achieved a rare feat for an artist by winning a bronze medal in the art competitions. This honor was awarded specifically for his work in the watercolor and drawing category, particularly for a piece titled "Horseman." This achievement brought a unique distinction to his name, linking the world of fine art with the spirit of athletic competition.

Beyond his own studio practice, Westermann dedicated much of his life to teaching. Between 1918 and 1945, he served as a lecturer at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. In this role, he helped shape the next generation of Dutch artists, including pupils such as Leo Visser, Jan Battermann, and Joop van den Broek. His influence extended into the professional community through his involvement with several organizations:

  • Board member of Arti en St. Lucas
  • Member of the Artist Association Sint Lucas
  • Member of Arti & Amicitiae

A Lasting Presence in Dutch Art

Westermann's output was substantial, leaving behind a body of work that captures both the personal and the historical. His paintings often featured knights, amazons, and cavalry soldiers, reflecting a fascination with figures from the past. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam holds more than 60 of his works, ensuring that his vision remains part of the national collection. In 1939, his talent was further recognized during the "Onze Kunst van Heden" exhibition and sale at the museum.

He remained a fixture of the Dutch art scene until his death in Amsterdam on February 3, 1971. His life was marked by a steady devotion to his craft and a commitment to the academic traditions of his training. Through his watercolors, gouaches, and drawings, he left behind a record of movement, history, and the enduring beauty of the natural world.
