          Primi anni e formazione

          Félix Edouard Vallotton, pittore e incisore svizzero-francese, nacque il 28 dicembre 1865 a Losanna, in Svizzera. Frequentò il Collège Cantonal, conseguendo un diploma di studi classici nel 1882. Nello stesso anno si trasferì a Parigi per studiare arte sotto Jules Joseph Lefebvre e Gustave Boulanger all'Académie Julian.

          Stile artistico e influenze

          I primi dipinti di Vallotton, perlopiù ritratti, erano saldamente radicati nella tradizione accademica. Tuttavia, il suo stile si evolse presto, influenzato dal post-impressionismo, dal simbolismo e soprattutto dalla xilografia giapponese.
