The images presented by the photographer Alex Kurunis were taken in the Greek island of Kos in August 2015. As he himself describes: “Kos is one of the key landing points for refugees crossing into Europe from different countries. Such stopping points within a larger journey to safety are characterised by a distinct sense of unknowing and anxiety. Travelling to new places without a clear idea of where you will end up, each step of the way filled with moments hinging upon a thin line between life and death; from the treacherous conditions in which they crossed the channel, to more everyday dangers from lack of sanitation and illness. What was clear more than anything however was that contrary to the persistent heartless portrayals in populist media, these people posed no threat to anyone: they are in danger, not dangerous”.

Biografia dell'artista

The Anthropological Eye: The Visionary World of Alex Kurunis

In the contemporary landscape of photography, few voices capture the delicate tension between human tradition and modern evolution as poignantly as Alex Kurunis. A London-based photographer whose work spans the realms of documentary, portrait, and fashion, Kurunis possesses a rare ability to freeze moments that are simultaneously intimate and universal. His artistic journey is deeply rooted in his dual heritage; born in Greece and raised in England, he carries within him a unique perspective that bridges Mediterranean warmth with Western analytical depth. This cultural duality serves as the foundation for an eye that is perpetually searching for the intersections where ancient customs meet the relentless march of modernity.

The intellectual scaffolding of his work is perhaps most significantly shaped by his academic background in Social Anthropology. Rather than merely observing subjects through a lens, Kurunis approaches his photography as a form of visual ethnography. His training allows him to navigate complex social dynamics with a profound respect for the human condition, seeking out the rituals, customs, and subtle interactions that bind communities together. This scholarly foundation transforms his images from simple captures into deep explorations of identity, memory, and the enduring relationship between humanity and its environment.

A Symphony of Realism and Abstraction

To encounter a Kurunis photograph is to enter a space where technical precision yields to emotional resonance. His signature style is a masterful blend of realism and abstraction, characterized by a deliberate use of muted palettes and subtle tonal shifts. He does not seek to overwhelm the viewer with hyper-saturated colors; instead, he employs light and shadow to evoke a specific atmosphere, allowing the mood of the scene to dictate the visual narrative. This approach draws inspiration from the giants of the medium, such as Ansel Adams and Henri Cartier-Bresson, yet Kurunis carves out his own niche by prioritizing the visceral feeling of a moment over mere documentation.

His technique is often defined by a sense of movement and candidness. Whether he is capturing the quiet dignity of a marginalized community or the high-energy aesthetic of fashion, there is an implicit trust between the photographer and his subjects. This intimacy allows him to capture what many call "the decisive moment," but with an added layer of anthropological insight. His work often explores themes of vulnerability and strength, particularly in projects that document the precariousness of life on the fringes of society.

Documenting the Human Spirit

The significance of Kurunis’s oeuvre lies in his commitment to telling stories that are often overlooked by the mainstream media. One of his most profound contributions is seen in his documentary work, such as his poignant series "In danger, not dangerous," captured on the Greek island of Kos. Through these images, he challenged the heartless portrayals of refugees in popular discourse, instead presenting a humanizing narrative that highlighted the anxiety and uncertainty of those caught in the middle of a life-altering journey. By focusing on the individual rather than the political abstraction, he restores agency and humanity to those often reduced to statistics.

Beyond his documentary triumphs, Kurunis has established himself as a formidable force in the commercial and fashion sectors, collaborating with prestigious names such as Nike, The North Face, and Paul Smith. This versatility demonstrates his ability to apply his profound social insight to the language of lifestyle and fashion, creating imagery that feels grounded and authentic even within a commercial context. His body of work remains a testament to the power of photography to act as both a mirror to society and a window into the soul, making him one of the most compelling contemporary photographers of his generation.
