The Artistic Evolution of Robert Bordo

Born in Montreal, Canada, Robert Bordo moved to New York to study at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. His practice has been characterized by a movement between representation and abstraction, exploring themes such as memory, landscape, weather, and mapping. His work has been featured in several public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Hammer Museum. Bordo has received several honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007 and the Robert De Niro, Sr. Prize.

Throughout his career, Bordo has developed various distinct series. His early work included "Map Paintings" that utilized glazes and textured fragments of color to suggest landmasses and contours. He also produced "Speech Bubble" paintings featuring empty bubbles on monochrome backgrounds, and "Denim" works involving stenciled bootprints. In the late 1990s, he explored "postcard paintings" consisting of small, rectangular landscape abstractions. His later work includes "Windshield" paintings and "crackup" paintings, which feature lines incised into wet oil surfaces to resemble broken window panes.
