The Life and Artistic Journey of Richard Sprick
Born in Herford, Germany, Richard Sprick was a painter and draftsman whose creative path began with studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule Bielefeld under Ludwig Godewols. He later moved to the Kunstakademie Kassel, studying under Curt Witte and Kay Heinrich Nebel between 1921 and 1923. After living in Berlin, Sprick moved to the Worpswede artists' colony in 1925, where he worked as a freelance artist and married the metal artist Lotte Heidelbach. His career saw him move to Bochum in 1927, where he served as an art teacher at the Goethe-Schule until 1943. During his time in Bochum, he maintained a close connection to the Bochumer Schauspielhaus, providing over 1,000 drawings of renowned actors and theatrical scenes.
Artistic Legacy and Later Years
Sprick's body of work was diverse, encompassing portraits of notable figures, landscapes inspired by travels throughout Europe, murals for public buildings, book illustrations, and technical drawings. His prolific output continued after the Second World War following a move to Schötmar, where he and his wife built a custom-designed home and studio that was later designated as a historical monument. His artistic output included various exhibitions, particularly within the Westphalia region, and his works were acquired by important museums. Following a period of illness, he passed away in Bad Salzuflen. Much of his estate is currently held in the Lippischen Landesmuseum in Detmold.
