The Artistic Evolution of Max Stern

Max Stern was a German painter and graphic artist of Jewish ancestry, associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. His formal training began at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied under instructors such as Adolf Schill, Peter Janssen, and Eduard von Gebhardt until 1892. He later transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, working with the genre painter Carl von Marr. In 1893, he was the youngest participant in an exhibition of the Munich Secession.

His stylistic journey saw him transition from an Impressionist to an advocate of the New Objectivity in the mid-1920s. Throughout his career, his primary focus remained on urban and rural scenes of people living their simple, daily lives. While he occasionally portrayed the upper classes at their amusements, he was especially sympathetic to working people practicing their professions.

Life and Persecution

Stern's life was marked by significant upheaval following the Nazi takeover in 1933. He was placed under a professional ban and expelled from the progressive artists' group, Malkasten. Despite the establishment of the Reichskulturkammer making it difficult to obtain painting supplies, he and fellow Jewish artists in the Judische Kulturbund were able to exhibit until 1936. In 1937, his works were included in the confiscation of "degenerate art" ordered by Joseph Goebbels.

The persecution extended to his personal life; his marriage to Alice Helene Burnier was scrutinized under the Nuremberg Laws. Following an invasion of his home by the Sturmabteilung in late 1938, he and his family sought refuge in a hospital. Max Stern was killed during a bombing by the RAF, as Jews were unable to use the air-raid shelters.
