The Life and Artistic Journey of Max Bergmann

Born in Fürstenberg, Germany, Max Bergmann was a painter who developed his artistic talent through formal training in both Berlin and Munich. His education began at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin-Charlottenburg, where he studied under Julius Ehrentraut and Konrad Böse. He later continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, attending the life drawing class of Ludwig von Herterich and eventually becoming a master student of Heinrich von Zügel in the animal painting class. During his formative years, Bergmann traveled extensively, including a period of study in Paris where he formed a friendship with Marcel Duchamp. His travels also took him to North France, Denmark, Norway, Austria, and Hungary.

In 1912, Bergmann moved to Haimhausen, a location that hosted a small artists' colony. Following the acquisition of a villa, he established a private, state-recognized painting school in 1925, complete with his own studio building. His teaching influenced various students, including Hermann Koenemann, Hans Frey, and the Brazilian painter Artur José Nísio. Throughout his career, his works were exhibited regularly at the Munich Glaspalast.

Artistic Style and Subject Matter

Bergmann is primarily recognized as an animal painter, specifically noted for his depictions of cattle, such as cows and oxen, often integrated into scenes of rural life. His work frequently features a transition from animal portraiture to genre painting. His technical approach is characterized by a bright, luminous colorism, utilizing a broad-brush application and an open painterly form. In many of his compositions, animals appear to move from the depth of the image directly toward the viewer.

Beyond his well-known animal subjects, his repertoire included:

His technical virtuosity is noted in works such as Cacti and Die Scholle, the latter of which is held in the collection of the German Historical Museum in Berlin.
