A Life Between Trade and Art
Jacob Arøe was a Danish merchant and colonial administrator who spent much of his life in Greenland. Born in Copenhagen, he followed in the footsteps of his father, Immanuel Arøe, who had served as a trading assistant in Sisimiut. After being confirmed in Greenland, Jacob began his own service in Qaqortoq in 1819, eventually moving through various locations including Sisimiut, Nanortalik, and Paamiut. He served as a deputy colonial administrator and later as the colonial administrator of Paamiut. Due to health reasons, he eventually left his duties in Greenland and returned to Copenhagen, where he lived until his death.
Documenting the Greenlandic Landscape
Without formal artistic training, Arøe began drawing during his time in Greenland, focusing his attention on the locations where he worked. His depictions of settlements, particularly Qaqortoq, were characterized by a high level of detail, sometimes serving as maps for building registration. His style evolved from bird's-eye perspectives to compositions that included a foreground to mark his specific location. His works include numerous views of various settlements such as Nuuk, Paamiut, Qeqertarsuatsiaat, Qaqortoq, Sissarissoq, Narsarmijit, Sisimiut, Qerrortusoq, Maniitsoq, Neu-Herrnhut, Akunnaat, and Alluitsoq. Many of these pieces are held in collections such as the National Museum in Copenhagen, the Greenlandic National Museum, or the Danish Maritime Museum.
