A Legacy of Neoclassical Mastery

Ignace Brice was a neoclassical painter from Brussels, specializing in genre scenes, portraits, and religious compositions. He began his artistic journey under the guidance of his father, Antoine Brice, and later studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. During his time at the Academy, he was strongly influenced by Jacques-Louis David, earning him the moniker "le David bruxellois." His artistic style was characterized by a sober and classical approach, reminiscent of the 17th-century Port-Royal painters such as Philippe de Champaigne.

Beyond his personal practice, Brice was deeply integrated into the Belgian art community. He served as a professor at the Academy, following in his father's footsteps, and was a founding member of the Société des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles. His works were exhibited extensively, including in Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp, and Amsterdam.

Artistic Works and Lineage

Brice was recognized for his great talent for drawing and his ability to capture subjects through both oil on canvas and lithography. His diverse repertoire includes:

  • The Poultryman (1827)
  • The Magician
  • The Holy Family surrounded by angels
  • Portrait of Adrien Joseph Eugène Oorlof
  • Portrait of Henri Joseph Meeûs
  • Portrait of Hortense Poelaert

  • Lithographic portrait of Thérèse Langhendries

He belonged to a family of painters; his father was Antoine Brice and his paternal grandfather was Pierre-François. In 1825, Ignace married Hortense van Dievoet.
