The Artistic Evolution of Hubert Berchtold
Hubert Berchtold was an Austrian painter and graphic artist. His formal training began during the Second World War while stationed in Antwerp, where he attended evening courses at the art academy and became acquainted with the Belgian painter Constant Permeke. Following this, he attended evening classes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Herbert Boeckl and later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under Josef Dobrowsky. After returning to Bregenz in 1949, his style evolved through travels in France, Spain, and Morocco during the 1950s. This period saw the development of a style influenced by German Expressionism, as well as inspirations from French painters such as Picasso and Georges Rouault.
During the 1960s, Berchtold developed a unique visual language through his insect series and his series of still lifes and bottles, creating a balance between figuration and abstract composition. His work in the 1970s included the Etruscan series, which featured dynamic compositions of figures and objects in motion. His later years were marked by a focus on landscapes, particularly following his time in southern Spain and the city of Ronda. His public works included stained glass windows for sacred spaces and a large-scale frieze of 51 panels for the Festsaal of the Vorarlberg Landhaus.
