The Artistic Evolution of David Bolduc

David Bolduc was a Canadian painter and printmaker born in Toronto. His early training took place at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and the School of Art and Design at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, where he studied under Arthur Lismer and Jean Goguen. His early career involved diverse work, including time in a plastics factory and a position in the conservation department at the Royal Ontario Museum.

His stylistic journey began with shaped canvases featuring contoured surfaces and simple geometric color designs. He later transitioned to minimal constructions using stretched white vinyl, followed by structures composed of rope, wood, and mirrors. By the mid-1970s, he developed a signature style characterized by central imagery abstracts. In these works, a main motif was rendered in impasto color, applied directly from the tube onto a stained background.

Themes and Travels

Bolduc’s work was deeply connected to his travels through various international locales. He journeyed through Europe, Turkey, Nepal, Uzbekistan, Moscow, India, Mexico, North Africa, China, the Himalayas, Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, Paris, Spain, and Portugal. He also spent time living and working in Paris and Morocco during the 1990s.

Beyond his canvas, Bolduc was a lifelong student of modern poetry and provided illustrations for several volumes, including works by Michael Ondaatje, Roy Kiyooka, Wayne Clifford, Victor Coleman, and David Rosenberg. He also contributed illustrations to the literary magazine Brick. His academic contributions included teaching at several institutions, such as:
