A Vital Partner in Art and Life

Catherine Blake, born Catherine Boucher, was a painter and a vital presence in the life of her husband, William Blake. Born in 1762, she met William in Battersea in 1781. The couple married on 18 August 1782 in St. Mary's Church, Battersea. While she was initially illiterate, signing her wedding contract with an 'X', William taught her to read, write, and operate his printing-press.

Throughout her husband's career, Catherine took an active role in the production of his engravings and illuminated books. She was known to take off proof impressions and print works with great care. Additionally, she was involved in the coloring of some of his illuminated books. Beyond her technical contributions, she managed the household finances and provided practical support.

Legacy and Later Years

Catherine remained with William until his death in 1827. Following his passing, she worked as a housekeeper for Frederick Tatham and continued to sell William's works. She died in 1831. The couple is buried at Bunhill Cemetery in London.
