A Life in Light and Shadow
Born Anna Catharina Schenck in Antwerp on 18 June 1868, the woman who would later be known as Anny Kernkamp began her creative life in the heart of Belgium. Her early years were shaped by formal training under the painter Henri Rul in her hometown, followed by further studies with Ernest Blanc-Garin in Brussels. This period of education provided the foundation for a style that sought to capture the natural world through an impressionistic lens.
In 1887, her life took a significant turn when she married Johann Heinrich Kernkamp, a man from Edam, Netherlands. It was following this marriage that she began signing her canvases as Anny Kernkamp. Her dedication to her craft was profound, yet it came with a personal cost. The very act of painting eventually led to an eye disease that forced her to set down her brushes around 1913, marking a quiet end to her active years of creation.
The Impressionist Eye
Kernkamp’s approach to the canvas was defined by what she described as "open air impressionism." She found her subject matter in the quiet details of the landscape and the stillness of still lifes. Her work often focused on the movement of nature, such as in Meandering stream in the woods, where light and water meet.
Her artistic community was centered around several notable groups and exhibitions:
- The Mechelen artist association "De Distel," of which she was a member.
- Exhibitions in Liège in 1902.
- Displays in Antwerp during 1904 and 1908.
- An international presence in Athens in 1904, where her work earned an international prize.
Legacy and Recognition
Though her ability to paint was curtailed by illness, the marks she left on the Belgian art scene remain visible in museum collections. Her paintings, including depictions of the Saint Anthony Church in Antwerp, have found a place within the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. She passed away in Brasschaat on 9 February 1947, leaving behind a body of work that captures a specific, fleeting moment in Belgian impressionism.
