Artist Biography

The Versatile Life of Charles Verlat

Born in Antwerp, Belgium, Charles Verlat was a multifaceted artist who mastered painting, watercolor, etching, and drawing. His artistic journey began under the guidance of Johannes Antonius van der Ven and later at the Antwerp Academy, where he studied under figures such as Gustave Wappers and Josephus Laurentius Dyckmans. Verlat’s early work was inspired by the Belgian Romantic school, focusing on significant events from Belgian history. As his career progressed, he moved to Paris, studying in the studios of Ary Scheffer and Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin. His stylistic evolution saw him move from Romanticism toward the Realism of Gustave Courbet, and later, during a period spent in Cairo and Jerusalem, his palette became more muted as he captured the landscapes and people of Palestine.

Artistic Subjects and Legacy

Verlat was widely recognized for his diverse subject matter. He was a noted animalier, capable of rendering animals with lively realism, as seen in works like The defense of the herd. His repertoire also included:

Beyond his studio work, Verlat served as a professor and director of the Antwerp Academy. His tenure there was marked by a notable encounter with Vincent van Gogh, who studied at the Academy in 1886. Despite his professional successes and various honors, including being named a knight in the French Legion of Honour, Verlat faced significant financial challenges due to the high costs of organizing large exhibitions and panoramas.
