The History and Origins of SMK The Statens Museum For Kunst traces its lineage back to the private art collections amassed by Danish monarchs. These royal holdings provided the foundation for what would become the largest art museum in Denmark. While the institution's roots are tied to these sovereign collections, its formal establishment is marked by two significant dates.

Early Life, Family and Training Inger Sitter entered the world in Trondheim, Norway, on 18 October 1929. She was the daughter of Ingvar Sitter and Ebba Pelander, and her early years were shaped by a life of movement and shifting horizons. Much of her childhood was spent amidst the rhythms of the sea, as she grew up partly on her father's ships while they sailed through European waters. This nomadic existence was balanced by time spent with her mother in Antwerp, where she attended primary school.
