Collectible Description

For the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Arulpragsam has produced a series of ten brightly coloured, 8 foot long print collages, framed with custom-built mirror mosaics. Built up of layers of saturated, digital colors and reflective, light-catching surfaces, the works feature 3D images of parrots, jungle foliage and gemstones, layered with photographs of crowds, children and cars. The prints are collaged with Arulpragasam’s custom-made holograms and silkscreen designs and framed with handcrafted mirrors. The mix of ancient and traditional icons with the ultra-modern digital surfaces is a representation of Arulpragasam’s experience of the new India. For the creation of the works, Arulpragasam commissioned wholesale print factories from cities across India to produce multiples of her designs. The large-format 3D lenticular images have been made in Bombay, by a commercial advertising hoarding company. Her holographic prints were made in a Chennai factory that produces tamper- proof security stickers for use on credit cards and banknotes worldwide. Silkscreen printing was performed by a local Kochi poster business house and the mirror frames are handmade by her uncle, who flew to Kochi to help her work with local craftsmen.

Artist Biography

Mathangi ‘Maya’ Arulpragasam: A Voice For The Dispossessed

Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam MBE (born July 18, 1975), known professionally as M.I.A., is a British rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, and activist whose music blends hip hop, electronica, world music, and alternative influences into powerfully evocative soundscapes. Born in London to Sri Lankan Tamil parents, her early life was profoundly shaped by the tumultuous backdrop of the Sri Lankan Civil War – experiences she channeled into groundbreaking artistic expression that challenged conventions and championed social justice.

Early Life & Influences: From Jaffna To London

Mathangi’s childhood unfolded amidst the escalating violence of the Sri Lankan Civil War, forcing her family to relocate from Jaffna to London as refugees when she was just eleven years old. This displacement instilled in her a deep understanding of resilience and vulnerability—themes that would permeate her artistic vision. Her formative years were marked by exposure to diverse cultural influences, including Tamil traditions and the burgeoning hip hop scene emerging in London’s multicultural landscape. Notably, she studied visual arts at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, honing her skills as a filmmaker and designer – disciplines which would later inform her distinctive aesthetic.

Musical Breakthrough & Artistic Evolution

M.I.A.’s musical journey began in 2002 with an underground mixtape titled *Piracy Funds Terrorism*, showcasing her burgeoning talent for blending genres and crafting politically charged lyrics. The release of “Galang” in 2003 catapulted her into the spotlight, establishing her as a pioneer of electronic music infused with Sri Lankan influences. Her debut album, *Arular* (2005), garnered critical acclaim for its bold experimentation and cemented her position as one of the foremost voices in contemporary hip hop—a genre she embraced wholeheartedly. Subsequent albums like *Kala* (2007) and *Maya* (2010) continued to push boundaries, exploring themes of identity, diaspora, and resistance through innovative sonic textures and visual storytelling.

Critical Recognition & Legacy

M.I.A.’s music has garnered widespread recognition from prestigious awards organizations including ASCAP and MTV Video Music Awards. She achieved unprecedented success with “Paper Planes” from *Kala*, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and selling over four million copies—a testament to her ability to connect with audiences globally. Furthermore, she was honored as one of the "Top 50 Dance/Electronic Artists of the 2010s" by Billboard and recognized as “one of the defining artists of the 2000s decade” by Rolling Stone. Her groundbreaking work has earned her accolades from Time magazine (“The 100 Most Influential People”), Esquire ("Top 75"), and she was awarded an MBE for her contributions to music—a symbol of her enduring impact on artistic culture. M.I.A.’s influence extends beyond musical innovation; she represents a powerful voice advocating for marginalized communities and challenging societal norms, solidifying her place as a visionary artist whose legacy continues to inspire generations.

Notable Achievements & Artistic Style

M.I.A.'s distinctive artistic style is characterized by its fusion of hip hop rhythms with elements of world music instrumentation—particularly Sri Lankan percussion—creating immersive sonic experiences that convey complex narratives and emotions. Her visual artistry complements her musical output, often incorporating striking imagery and symbolism to reinforce thematic concerns. She has been nominated for an Academy Award and Grammy Award simultaneously – a rare feat demonstrating the breadth of her artistic talent. Beyond awards, M.I.A.’s collaborative projects with artists like Diplo and Timbaland have broadened her creative horizons and cemented her reputation as a trailblazer in electronic music production.
