On September 27, 1979, Ma, alongside Huang Rui, organized the groundbreaking "Stars Exhibition" outside the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. This audacious act of creative dissent publicly confronted the political system, seeking to express not only democracy and freedom but also a rediscovered sense of beauty that had been suppressed by political upheaval. The cost of such bravery was significant. The governmental repression against these “liberal thinkers” eventually forced Ma to relocate to Paris in 1986.
