Henry Wright Kerr was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1857, the son of John Kerr, a solicitor, and Elizabeth Thomson. His early life was marked by a fascination with art from a young age, nurtured by his father’s encouragement and fostered during his formative years at Banff Academy, where he honed his artistic skills alongside fellow students like James Matthews Duncan. Following military service in the Royal Artillery (1879–1883), Kerr returned to Edinburgh and pursued a career as a commercial artist, securing employment with Leith Shipping Company.
