Gong Jianxin was born in Urumqi, Xinjiang in 1938. He was admitted to the Department of Traditional Chinese Painting of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1956. After graduation in 1961, he was assigned to the Xinjiang Academy of Art to teach. In 1980, he was transferred to the Xinjiang Academy of Fine Arts. He has been invited to teach at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the Department of Fine Arts of the Central Academy of Nationalities and the Department of Oriental Art of Nankai University. He is the director of the Chinese Artists Association and the first-level artist of the state that enjoys the special allowance of the State Council. Now he is honorary chairman of Xinjiang Artists Association and honorary president of Xinjiang Painting Academy.
