His commissions, such as "Mail Transportation" for the San Pedro Federal Building, demonstrated his ability to weave social narrative into large-scale public works. Even when faced with controversy—as seen with his WPA mural study "Mine Rescue," which was met with local resistance due to its honest portrayal of mining perils—Martin remained committed to a truthful representation of labor and life.
