Estudio de un perro tumbado con las patas delantera estiradas y las traseras dobladas y ocultas tras el cuerpo sobre un papel con cuadrícula a lápiz para centrar el dibujo. Forma parte de una serie de dibujos que Antonio del Castillo realiza sobre animales, todos ellos sin fechar y siguiendo una técnica bastante similar. Estos estudios le sirven para insertarlos luego en sus composiciones pictóricas. Priscilla Müller también apunta que pudieran ser modelos para ser grabados.La rareza de esta tipología de dibujo animalístico dentro de la producción del dibujo español hace que sean únicos y complejos de fechar. Se encuentran relacionados con los grabados de Abraham Bloemaert y con los tratados de anatomía, como el orfebre sevillano Juan de Arfe. Castillo copia, reproduce y reinterpreta los animales que se encuentra en estos y los trata de manera independiente y aislados. También le influyeron las estancias en el Cortijo Rubio el bajo que a partir de 1655, le acercan a la naturaleza de manera directa y le inspiraron a dibujar del natural.
