Jan Rosen was born on 16 October 1854 in Warsaw, Poland. He came into a wealthy Jewish family that had converted to Calvinism, though his personal path eventually led him to become a Lutheran. Even as a young boy, it was clear that he possessed a natural affinity for the pencil and charcoal. He displayed an early talent for drawing, a skill that would eventually define his life's work.
His formal path into the arts began under the guidance of Franciszek Kostrzewski, who provided his first lessons. This early instruction helped shape the hand of a boy who would later become a professional painter and illustrator. By the time he reached his late teens, his ambitions were taking him beyond the borders of Poland.
In 1872, Jan Rosen moved to Munich to pursue a more rigorous education. He spent three years at the Academy of Fine Arts, studying there until 1875. These formative years in Munich provided the technical foundation necessary for the specialized work he would later produce.
Jan Rosen’s formal training began with a foundation in drawing, guided by the instruction of Franciszek Kostrzewski. Seeking to refine his skills, he moved through several significant academic environments. Between 1872 and 1875, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. During this period, he also sought out private lessons from the battle painter Józef Brandt, a move that likely influenced his later focus on military subjects. His education eventually led him to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he spent four years studying under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Isidore Pils.
His life was marked by a series of moves across Europe as he navigated the demands of his career and family. He lived successively in Munich, Paris, and Lausanne. By 1891, he had settled in Russia, where his talent for capturing military detail led to him becoming a court painter to Alexander III. This period of his life was defined by his ability to render the specificities of uniforms and weaponry with great precision.
In his later years, Rosen sought new environments and light. In 1907, he traveled to North Africa, and the following year, in 1908, he visited Scandinavia. These travels allowed him to experience landscapes and atmospheres far removed from the structured academies of his youth.
Rosen found his true calling in the chaos and precision of military history. He became most recognized for his depictions of battle scenes, focusing heavily on the conflicts of the Napoleonic Wars. His brushwork captured the specificities of warfare, from the movement of cavalry to the exact details of uniforms and weapons. He had a particular fondness for horses, making them a recurring and central motif in his compositions. Beyond the Napoleonic era, he also turned his attention to the November Uprising, documenting these historical struggles through his art.
His life was marked by significant movement across Europe and beyond. After spending time in Russia, North Africa, and Scandinavia, he eventually returned to his homeland. He did not settle back in Poland until 1921, following the conclusion of the Polish-Soviet War. He remained in Warsaw for the rest of his life, where he passed away on 8 November 1936.
