Normal nr. 7 is a piece composed of a photograph from a medical slides archive printed on cotton paper that was exposed to a device of intravenous lines filled with black stamping ink. The image shows a part of the female body that is fractioned in three. For three months, the photograph was subject to an irregular dripping that modified it. The work is changing along time and is constantly in transformation although the ink is not falling, since the absorbed liquid keeps running through the paper fibers. In this contraction of the ink, the image subtly appears again. Normal nr. 7 is a piece that testimonies the occlusion of representation through the ink used at bureaucratic offices. The body redoubles its influence and what it represents, having gone through a disobedient immersion, without scientific regulations or exact measures.

艺术家简介

The Alchemy of Memory: The Artistic Journey of Carolina Magnin

Born in 1975 in the vibrant cultural landscape of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Carolina Magnin has emerged as a profound voice in contemporary visual arts. Her practice is not merely an exploration of the lens, but a deep, philosophical inquiry into the very nature of existence, memory, and the ephemeral. Magnin’s artistic identity was forged through a rigorous academic foundation, beginning with studies at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at the Universidad Buenos Aires (UBA). This unique intersection of philosophical thought and visual experimentation became the cornerstone of her oeuvre, allowing her to approach photography not just as a method of documentation, but as a way to present alternative realities and explore the tensions between presence and absence.

Her technical evolution was shaped by an international perspective, enriched by intensive training at the Escuela Argentina de Fotografía (EAF) and transformative experiences at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York. These formative years instilled in her a mastery of photographic methodologies that would later allow her to bridge the gap between classical tradition and avant-garde experimentation. Magnin’s work often draws from the shadows of history, finding inspiration in the emotional depth of Romanticism and the observational precision of Realism—echoing the legacies of masters such as Eugène Delaciente and Gustave Courbet. Yet, she refuses to remain anchored in the past, instead utilizing digital tools and experimental physical processes to push the boundaries of what a photograph can represent.

Technique and the Poetics of Transformation

What distinguishes Magnin’s work is her fearless embrace of the unpredictable. She often moves beyond the traditional print, treating the photographic surface as a living, breathing entity subject to decay and metamorphosis. A striking example of this is found in her piece Normal nr. 7, where she utilizes medical slide archives printed on cotton paper, subsequently subjecting them to an irregular dripping of black stamping ink via intravenous lines. This process creates a work that is in constant flux, as the absorbed liquid continues to migrate through the paper fibers long after the initial application. In such works, the artist explores the concept of occlusion—the way layers of ink can hide and then subtly reveal the human form, mirroring the way memory obscures and reconstructs our understanding of the self.

Her research is deeply rooted in the idea of memory as a construction. She investigates the traces, marks, and hidden layers that constitute our personal and collective histories. Whether she is exploring the duality of positive and negative space—as seen in Incorporel 4, inspired by the literary textures of Mario Levrero—or manipulating archival materials to find the latent within the visible, her technique always serves a higher conceptual purpose. Her art invites the viewer into a liminal space, a moment between sleep and wakefulness, where reality and fiction, individuality and universality, begin to dissolve into one another.

Recognition and Cultural Legacy

Throughout her distinguished career, Magnin has garnered significant acclaim within the international art community. Her dedication to excellence has been recognized through numerous prestigious awards, including:

  • First Prize at the Escuela Argentina de Fotografía (EAF)
  • Mention Prize at the Salón Nacional de Artes Visuales - Palais de Glace
  • Finalist for the Renaissance Photography Prize in London
  • Second Prize in the Paradigma Digital Macstation contest

Beyond her individual achievements, Magnin is a vital contributor to the Argentinian art ecosystem. As the co-director of the La Ira de Dios artist space, she actively champions emerging talent and fosters cultural exchange within Buenos Aires. Her exhibitions have spanned continents, reaching audiences in the United States, Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom, proving that her visual language transcends borders. By weaving together the weight of historical reference with the fluidity of modern innovation, Carolina Magnin continues to redefine the photographic medium, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of contemporary art.
