Born in Vienna, Austria, Viktor Scharf was the son of Alexander Scharf and María Luisa Chauvan. Although he earned a doctorate in law from the University of Vienna, he ultimately abandoned his legal career to pursue painting. His formal artistic training began at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich before he moved to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. During his time in Paris, he was taught by renowned painters such as James McNeill Whistler and Eugène Carrière.
