A Life of Form and Color

Born in East Brighton, England, Gordon Appelbe Smith was a Canadian artist who dedicated his life to expanding the dialogue between abstraction and representation. His artistic journey began with early training at the Harrow County School for Boys, followed by studies in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Vancouver. A veteran of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, Smith served as a lieutenant, Platoon Commander, and Intelligence Officer during the war, sustaining injuries during the landing at Leon Forte, Sicily.

His creative evolution saw him move from mid-to-late fifties abstractions characterized by thick black-line grids and structures toward a unique exploration of the landscape. This evolution eventually led to his Seawall series, where he utilized horizontal bands to compose ocean vistas. His diverse practice spanned painting, printmaking, and sculpting, including the massive wall sculpture Beach Tangle.

Teaching and Legacy

Beyond his studio practice, Smith was a significant educator. He taught at the Vancouver School of Art for ten years and later spent 26 years at the University of British Columbia, where he became an Education Professor Emeritus. His commitment to art education was further solidified through the formation of the Artists for Kids Trust.

His contributions to the visual arts were recognized through numerous prestigious honors, including:

  • Member of the Order of Canada
  • Recipient of the Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts
  • Laureate of the Governor General's Award in the Visual and Media Arts
  • Member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts

His works are held in esteemed collections, including the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.
