Early Life, Family and Training

Born in Paris, France, in 1666, François Marot entered a world where the brush was a family legacy. He was the son of Jean-Baptiste, a painter whose own fame remained modest, yet he provided the essential foundation for his son's future. This early immersion in the craft ensured that the boy grew up surrounded by the scents and tools of the studio, preparing him for a life dedicated to the canvas.

The trajectory of his talent took a decisive turn when he came under the guidance of Charles de La Fosse. The connection between the two was profound, transcending a simple apprenticeship. François Marot became a devoted disciple of La Fosse, absorbing the master's manner and nuances with such precision that his hand often mirrored that of his teacher. He was regarded as the best disciple of La Fosse, a distinction that spoke to his ability to capture the essence of the style he had inherited through study.

Career and Royal Academy Membership

The path of Marot led him toward the prestigious halls of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. His talent and steady ascent within the institution were marked by a formal reception as a history painter in 1702. This admission followed the presentation of his work, Les Fruits de la Paix de Ryswick, which secured his place among the professional elite of his time. His reputation grew alongside his technical skill, drawing the attention of the crown and the grandest institutions of the state.

His influence within the Academy continued to expand through the years. On June 30, 1705, he was appointed as an assistant professor, a position that allowed him to guide others in the traditions of his craft. This was not merely a title of prestige but a reflection of his standing in the Parisian art world. Eventually, his authority was fully recognized on September 28, 1715, when he attained the rank of professor. His career was deeply intertwined with the service of the monarchy, as he found steady work through his commissions for the King's Buildings.

Major Commissions and Works

The artist found himself deeply embedded in the grand visual programs of the French court, securing positions that required a mastery of both myth and history. In 1711, he contributed his hand to the History of the King series, a significant undertaking that placed his skill within the very fabric of royal storytelling. His ability to navigate complex allegories led him to the Marble Trianon at Versailles, where he painted Latona and the Peasants of Lycia in 1714. This work required a delicate touch to capture the tension of the mythological scene for such a prestigious setting.

Beyond the halls of Versailles, his brush moved through various subjects of grace and movement. He composed Pan and Syrinx as an oil on canvas, a work measuring 131 x 114 cm that captures a moment of classical drama. His talent for the allegorical was further seen in Allégorie de la vue, an oil on canvas measuring 83.8 x 126.8cm. Through these various commissions, he sought to translate the grand themes of his era into tangible, painted realities.

Later Years and Death

In the autumn of his life, Marot found stability within the domestic sphere of Paris. On September 3, 1703, he entered into marriage with Marie-Louise Bidault, the daughter of a jeweler. Their union was a quiet cornerstone amidst his professional duties, and together they raised a large family of ten children. They established their household at the quai de l'Horloge, under the sign of the "Mouton," where the rhythms of family life intertwined with his continued standing in the capital.

The painter’s final years were spent within the city that had seen his rise from a dedicated student to a respected professor. He remained a fixture of the Parisian art scene until his passing on December 3, 1719. He died at his home on the rue Guénégaud, leaving behind a legacy etched into the very fabric of the French Academy. Following his death, he was laid to rest in the soil of Saint-André-des-Arts.
