The Landscape of a Polymath
The life of Štefan Gerstner begins in Ostrihom, where the year 1939 marks his entry into a world that would eventually see him master many forms of expression. He does not settle into a single lane. Instead, his identity shifts between the roles of a publicist, a landscape painter, and a painter. His work is a collection of observations, a way of documenting the world through both the written word and the brushstroke. He moves through the mid-20th century not as a specialist, but as a man of many disciplines.
His output is substantial, comprising 36 works that capture specific moments in time. His focus shifts between the written word and the visual medium, documenting the terrain and the human experience through various lenses. These pieces are the physical remains of his gaze upon the land and the structures within it, reflecting a life spent observing the world from multiple perspectives.
