An Experimental Visionary
Robert Breer was an American experimental filmmaker, painter, sculptor, animator, lithographer, and film director. Born in Detroit, United States, he began his artistic career as a painter after studying at Stanford University and in Paris. A founding member of the American avant-garde, Breer is best known for his films, which blend abstract and representational painting, hand-drawn rotoscoping, original 16mm and 8mm film footage, and photographs.
During his time living in Paris from 1949 to 1959, he produced abstract experimental films and exhibited paintings and kinetic sculptures at galleries such as Galerie Denise René. His transition from painting to filmmaking was driven by a desire to move away from the rigid notions of the school of Mondrian, seeking instead a medium that allowed for constant change.
