The German Canvas
The year is 1895 when Mathias Barz enters the world. He moves through a century of profound transformation, eventually passing away in 1982. His presence in the German art scene is marked by a quiet, persistent output that eventually found its way into significant collections, including the Deutsche Bank Collection. His work is not merely a collection of images but a record of a specific era in German history.
The brushstrokes of Barz find their way into the auction houses of the modern era. In 2017, a piece titled Bei Mutter Ey reached a realized auction price of 11,440 USD. This specific work, alongside Auf dem Weg durch den Ort (Gift from Mutter Ey, 1930), anchors his legacy in the tangible reality of the art market. His paintings command higher values than his works on paper, which have seen prices reach up to 641 USD.
Exhibition and Presence
Barz’s career is defined by a series of exhibitions that spanned decades. Between 1932 and 2015, his work appeared in various venues across Germany. These shows were not scattered randomly; they were concentrated in specific cultural hubs:
- Düsseldorf
- Frankfurt am Main
- Nürnberg
His exhibition history includes both solo and group shows. These appearances in galleries and museums established a footprint that survived long after his death. The record of his work remains visible in the auction results of houses like Lehr Art Auction, where his paintings continue to surface for collectors.
