A Life Between Continents
Leon Lippert began his life in Sailauf, Germany, in 1863. His hands learned the craft of painting in Cincinnati, a city that shaped his technical foundation. He eventually moved across the ocean, becoming a German immigrant to the United States. His work was not limited to a single subject; he moved between portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. He also applied his skill to murals, church decorations, and commercial illustrations. His hands were busy with many different kinds of visual tasks throughout his long life.
He lived until 1947, passing away in Newport, Kentucky. His career spanned many decades, covering the transition from the late nineteenth century into the mid-twentieth century. He was a man of many tools and many subjects.
The Texture of the Work

It shows a quiet, focused scene, where the subject is lost in the music. The use of oil over a photographic print gives the figure a grounded, physical presence that simple paint might not achieve alone.
