The Life and Artistic Evolution of Jay DeFeo
Born Mary Joan DeFeo in Hanover, United States, the artist became a celebrated figure in the 1950s within the community of Beat artists, musicians, and poets in San Francisco. After studying at the University of California, Berkeley, she traveled through Europe, living in Paris and London before settling in Florence. Her early career involved creating jewelry, small paintings, and drawings, often working as an artist's model. DeFeo’s practice was characterized by an experimental approach to various media, including drawings, paintings, sculpture, photography, photocopies, collages, and photo collages. She often worked in series, exploring themes such as light and dark or mirror opposites, and frequently transformed everyday objects into works with universal character.
The Creation of The Rose and Later Works
DeFeo is best known for her monumental work, The Rose, which she worked on from 1958 to 1966. This piece was created through a sculptural process where she built up and carved away paint, resulting in a starburst motif with textured ridges. The work was eventually acquired by the Whitney Museum of American Art. In the 1970s, she turned her attention to photography, utilizing a Mamiya camera and later a Hasselblad camera to create photo collages and a visual diary of her studio work. Her later years included a series of Samurai drawings inspired by a trip to Japan and the Reflections of Africa series. She taught at several institutions, including the San Francisco Art Institute and Mills College, until her death in Oakland.
