The Spires of Prague

Prague, 1894. The son of a miller and a baker’s daughter, Jaroslav Vodrážka begins a life shaped by the shifting borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His early impulses are raw, found in the margins of newspapers and the dust of sidewalks. He eventually finds formal discipline at a school for the applied arts, mastering the intricate mechanics of printmaking. Then, the world fractures. The Great War pulls him from the classroom to the Alpine front in Italy, where he serves in military hospitals and sketches the realities of war.

After the war, the landscape of his life shifts toward the classroom and the printing press. He becomes an art teacher in Bohemia, but his path leads him further east. From 1923 to 1939, he resides in Slovakia, working in Svaty Martin. Here, his hand finds a specific rhythm, specializing in typography and book design in the Slovak language. He is a man of lines and precision, a craftsman of the small-format print.

Internal Exile

The mid-century brings a tightening of the world. As the Nazi occupation takes hold and the subsequent Soviet era descends upon Czechoslovakia, Vodrážka becomes an "internal émigré." He lives on the West Bank of the Vltava River, a quiet refuge where the spires of St. Vitus Cathedral dominate the view. This skyline becomes a recurring ghost in his work, appearing in his etchings and sketches. He lives a life of quiet resistance, maintaining his creative integrity within the cramped apartments of Prague, surrounded by books and musical recordings while the political world outside remains closed.

His studio is a place of technical experimentation. He moves between diverse media, seeking the right way to capture a subject:

  • Etchings and engravings
  • Wood engravings and linocuts
  • Watercolors and sketches
  • Lithographs
  • Graphic techniques using plastic and plexiglass

Sacred Geometry and Unfinished Light

Vodrážka’s vision often turns toward the divine, though his approach remains intimate and figurative. He populates his small-format prints with spiritual figures: St. Vaclav, St. Martin, and a Madonna Painter. He explores the tension of faith through subjects like Don Quixote keeping vigil at the Cross. His sketches reveal a man preoccupied with the interplay of light and structure, evidenced by his many unrealized projects for ecclesiastical spaces. He envisioned stained glass windows for the Neo-Gothic Church of St. Ludmila in Prague and sanctuaries in Pilsen and the Banska Bystrica region, designs that remain trapped in his surviving sketchbooks.

He dies in 1984, five years before the political structures he navigated through his art finally collapse. He leaves behind a body of work defined by the precision of the printmaker and the soul of the observer, a record of a man who watched the spires of Prague through the lens of a changing century.
