Early Life and Artistic Training
Georges Capgras was born in Joinville-le-Pont, France, on May 16, 1866. His early years in this French setting provided the foundation for a life spent entirely within the realm of painting. He would remain active in the art world until his death in Paris on August 5, 1947.
His formal education was shaped by the guidance of several distinct hands. He began his studies under Georges Callot, learning the fundamentals of the craft. This training continued as he moved into the studios of William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Gustave Moreau. These teachers offered him different ways to see the world and the human form. He also spent time as a student of Émile Charles Dameron, adding another layer to his technical development.
Exhibitions and Professional Career
His presence in the art world moved from the local to the international quite steadily. In 1897, his work reached São Paulo, and by 1899, he was exhibiting at the Salon des artistes français. These early years established a rhythm of regular appearances in established spaces. His reach extended far beyond Europe, with exhibitions held in Tokyo and Copenhagen, showing a reach that spanned different continents and cultures.
The middle years of his career saw him taking on more formal roles. In 1918, he served as a painter for the armies, with his work being displayed at the Musée du Luxembourg. This period of service was followed by exhibitions at the Galerie Allard in 1920 and the Galerie Georges Petit in 1925. His professional life was marked by these steady placements in galleries and museums, reflecting a consistent presence in the French art scene.
Beyond the gallery walls, his hand was found in the private and ceremonial spaces of the era. He was tasked with the decoration of the royal bedroom, including the ceilings and panels of the Abedin Palace for King Fouad I. He also contributed to the interior design of the ocean liner Gallia, specifically decorating its music room.
Notable Works and Museum Collections
The physical presence of Capgras's work can be found in several institutions across different continents. His paintings are held within the Musée des beaux-arts de San Francisco and the Musée de l'Armée. In France, his pieces are part of the collections at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon and the Hôtel de ville de Paris. These locations house various studies and compositions that reflect his technical focus.
Looking at his specific subjects, one finds works such as Running away and Invasion en terre celtique. He also produced a triptych titled Terre d'Alsace. Other compositions include Vie paisible. These works show a range of subjects, from specific landscapes to more quiet, still scenes.
