Emerson Woelffer was an American artist and educator born in Chicago, United States. In the later stages of his career, as he dealt with macular degeneration, his technique evolved into working with white crayon on black paper.

After studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, he joined the WPA Arts Program and later taught at the Art Institute of Chicago following his service in the US Air Force. His teaching career included roles at Black Mountain College, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, and the Chouinard Art Institute. Later, he served as the Chair of the Painting Department at the Otis Art Institute.
