This single instrument became his window into the soul of Nigeria, allowing him to embark on a self-taught odyssey through the streets, markets, and landscapes of his homeland. As he navigated the complexities of urban development, Esiebo developed an unwavering dedication to capturing authentic narratives, seeking to foster genuine connections between the subjects behind the lens and the viewers observing them from afar.
The technical foundation of his craft was built through both mentorship and hands-on experimentation. Early in his development, Esiebo engaged in vital artistic dialogues with the U.S.-based photographer Paul Udstrand, whose introduction to seminal photographic works expanded his intellectual horizons. This period of growth was further enriched by the practical mastery he gained while assisting his uncle, Esiebo Joseph, a commercial photographer in Ibadan. In the quiet, chemical-scented atmosphere of the darkroom, Esiebo learned the delicate art of black and white printing, a process that instilled in him a profound understanding of light, shadow, and the enduring power of visual storytelling.
As his career transitioned from freelance assignments to ambitious, deeply personal projects, Esiebo’s work began to tackle the pressing social currents of West Africa. His commitment to social responsibility is perhaps most poignantly seen in “My Eye, My World,” a collaborative workshop designed to empower socially excluded children in Nigeria through the medium of photography.
