Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, Hans Seyppel was the son of the painter, draftsman, and writer Carl Maria Seyppel and Helene Brunstering. He studied under Claus Meyer, Carl Ederer, and Willy Spatz, and later became a master student of Franz Kiederich until 1920.
During the First World War, Seyppel served as a soldier and company leader, sustaining multiple wounds. He documented his wartime service in France, Flanders, Galicia, and Russia through numerous sketchbooks. His later life included studies in the Lower Rhine, the Netherlands, Hesse, Italy, and Spain. He was married to the interior designer Hedwig Beyer and maintained an atelier in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel.
