Initially drawn to counseling and teaching art, particularly in Puerto Rico and Cleveland, Lahens’s experiences as an educator profoundly shaped her approach to creating work that explores themes of identity, heritage, and the human condition. Lahens’s formal training began at the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1993, where she received the prestigious Portfolio Scholarship. However, it was her subsequent studies at Universidad Interamericana in San Germán, Puerto Rico, culminating in a Master's degree in Painting in 2000, that truly solidified her artistic vision. During this period, she immersed herself in the local art scene, absorbing influences from both traditional Puerto Rican painting and contemporary international movements. The Vermont Studio Center residency in 2000 further broadened her horizons, exposing her to a diverse range of artists and perspectives.
