During the chaotic years of the Cultural Revolution, Li defied the prevailing political winds to secretly study the works of Bada Shanren, a revered master of the Qing dynasty. This secret devotion to traditional ink painting provided him with a spiritual and technical foundation that would eventually allow him to transcend the limitations of his era.
The trajectory of Li’s career was as dramatic as the landscapes he once painted. He experienced an meteoric rise during the artistic rejuvenation of Sichuan province under Deng Xiaoping, reaching such heights of fame that by 1980, he was invited to showcase his art for the paramount leader himself. Yet, this period of prominence was shadowed by a sudden and "hellish" descent into political disgrace during the anti-Western campaigns of the early 1980s.
