Doménikos Theotokópoulos, known to the world as El Greco – “the Greek” – was a painter whose life and work defied easy categorization. The atmosphere of Toledo—characterized by austere piety and a fervent devotion to Catholicism—provided an ideal backdrop for El Greco’s artistic explorations.
