The Materiality of Form

Born in Castelgomberto in 1932, Giuseppe Castagna developed a practice defined by the physical limits of his medium. His early years were shaped by the traditions of restoration, working as an apprentice on frescoes and stained glass. This foundational contact with fragile surfaces informed a career that would later span much more rugged territories. After completing studies at the Accademia Cignaroli in Verona and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, he moved toward a more experimental approach to sculpture and ceramics.

His work was never confined to a single substance. Instead, his research focused on testing the resistance of whatever material sat before him. He moved through a vast landscape of media, including:

  • Ceramic and porcelain
  • Glass and Murano glass
  • Bronze and aluminum
  • Cast iron and steel
  • Marble, stone, and cement
  • Wood and tree branches

This technical versatility allowed him to create works that felt deeply connected to their surroundings. He often sought out natural or urban spaces where his sculptures could engage in a direct dialogue with the environment.

A Life of Collaboration and Craft

Between 1959 and 1964, Castagna’s path intersected with the Scottish sculptor Michael Noble. Together, they established a ceramics school and workshop near Garda, known as P.C. and N. This period was marked by a specific social purpose; the studio served as a space for training individuals with mental disorders from the Verona psychiatric hospital. In this setting, Castagna applied his skill in preparing enamels and firing pieces to a collaborative creative process.

As he moved his workshop to Costermano sul Garda, his ambitions grew toward the monumental. His later years saw him participating in large-scale initiatives that utilized industrial materials like steel and cement. Notable works from this era include:

  • The Sails installation of 1981, made of cast iron
  • The Venetian Block in Castellon de La Plana, Spain, a ten-meter structure of Murano glass and steel
  • The Canyon sculpture, created for the 9th Santo Tirso International Symposium of Contemporary Sculpture
  • The Reed glass work, held in the contemporary art collection of Montecitorio

Recognition and Final Years

Castagna’s presence in the international art circuit was established through significant exhibitions. He contributed to the 13th and 42nd Venice Biennales and presented works at the Milan Triennale. His reach extended far beyond Italy, with exhibitions in Tokyo and New York, as well as retrospectives in Trento and Mantua.

His artistic identity remained rooted in an anti-classicism influenced by figures such as Brancusi and Modigliani. He approached design and sculpture not as mere objects, but as architectural interventions. Following a life spent pushing the endurance of stone, metal, and glass, he passed away in Costermano sul Garda in 2017.
