This sculpture is one of a series that Nicola Durvasula made as homages and reprisals of modernist masterpieces. Kinetic Sculpture remakes Naum Gabo’s work, Kinetic Construction (Standing Wave) (1919-20). In Gabo’s sculpture, a metal rod mounted on a pedestal vibrates and a line turns into a form that occupies space.Durvasula’s sculpture replaces the upright metal rod with the consumable, ephemeral and culturally marked agarbatti or incense stick. In Durvasula’s piece, the viewer is expected to insert an agarbatti into the stand and light it, as one would in the daily ritual of puja, and then press the switch that will make it vibrate. Unlike Gabo’s uniform metal rod, the aggarbatti has a glowing tip, which describes a visually compelling arc.Translating Gabo’s sculpture into local material, Durvasula creeps into modernism’s masculine terrain, occupies it, and fills it with perfume.

Nicola Durvasula: Bridging East and West Through Sensory Exploration

Nicola Durvasula’s artistic journey began in Jersey, United Kingdom, where she honed her foundational skills at the École des Beaux Arts du Havre before furthering her studies at Kent Institute of Art and Design. This early exposure to diverse artistic traditions would prove pivotal in shaping her distinctive approach – one characterized by a profound fascination with blending Eastern philosophies and Western techniques into captivating visual narratives. She sought inspiration from masters like Nicolas Poussin, whose serene landscapes and mythological tales resonated deeply with her sensibilities. Her nomadic lifestyle has taken her across continents, from France’s vibrant cultural landscape to India's spiritual heartland and ultimately establishing her presence in the United States. These experiences instilled within Durvasula an unwavering commitment to exploring intersections between cultures, translating these observations into evocative artworks that resonate with layered meanings. Her artistic repertoire spans painting, sculpture, and installation, demonstrating a versatility that reflects her intellectual curiosity and desire to engage with complex ideas. Notably, she collaborated closely with musician John Tilbury on projects like “Practice Pieces,” creating sculptural explorations designed to provoke contemplation on the passage of time and the beauty of forgotten spaces—a deliberate juxtaposition mirroring the dynamism found in natural phenomena. Durvasula’s sculptures are particularly noteworthy for their kinetic qualities – pieces that seem to breathe and shift subtly, capturing fleeting moments of grace. These works exemplify her meticulous attention to detail and her ability to transform raw materials into objects imbued with expressive power. She actively engages with architectural spaces, crafting installations that respond to their environment and invite viewers to consider how art can enrich our understanding of the physical world. Her artistic vision draws heavily from Hindu iconography, utilizing visual languages to communicate profound spiritual truths while simultaneously grounding herself in Western artistic conventions—resulting in pieces possessing a striking duality. Her achievements have garnered recognition through numerous solo exhibitions across galleries and museums globally. Durvasula’s contribution to contemporary art is marked by her willingness to experiment with unconventional mediums and conceptual frameworks – a characteristic that distinguishes her from many of her peers. She continues to push boundaries, fostering dialogue between disparate cultural perspectives and enriching the artistic landscape with pieces that transcend geographical limitations. Nicola Durvasula's legacy lies in her ability to articulate complex ideas through sensory experiences, cementing her place as a significant voice within the realm of contemporary art.
