His career faced significant challenges during the National Socialist era; after refusing to join the Bund Deutscher Maler und Graphiker in 1937, he was banned from exhibiting and working. This period of restriction, coupled with a severe lung disease that required years in sanatoriums, limited his output to drawings between 1944 and 1947. Following his recovery and the death of his parents, he lived on social assistance before finding recognition in the post-war era.
