A Life in Lyon

Michel Philibert Genod entered the world in Lyon on 20 September 1795. His early years were shaped by a city still finding its footing after the hardships of a siege. From a young age, he sought direction in art, eventually studying under Pierre Revoil between 1807 and 1813. This mentorship provided him with a foundation in precision that would define his later work.

By 1819, Genod was presenting his work to the public at the Salon. His talent caught the attention of influential figures, including the Duke of Berry, who purchased some of his paintings. Even King Louis XVIII remarked on the emotional depth of his art, noting that his work spoke not only to the eyes but also to the heart. This ability to connect with viewers became a hallmark of his career.

The Troubadour Style

Genod worked primarily as a genre and history painter, finding his voice within the Troubadour style. His technique often blended the sharp clarity learned from Revoil with a certain smoothness and use of light and shadow. In works such as L'Amour et Psyché, created in 1827, he utilized crystalline lines and a marble-like finish to render his subjects.

His approach to painting often drew from classical mythology and the influence of other artists. For instance, his depiction of Cupid and Psyche shows clear inspiration from the compositions used by Anne-Louis Girodet Trioson. He had a particular skill for rendering small, delicate details—a butterfly, a quiver, or the wings of a god—with great care.

Teaching and Later Years

Beyond his own canvas, Genod contributed to the education of others. In 1839, he was appointed as a professor at the École des beaux-arts de Lyon, a role he maintained until his death. Through this position, he guided students like Fleury Chenu, passing on the traditions of his training.

His later years were marked by continued recognition and service to the arts. He was awarded a second-class medal and was eventually named a Knight in the Legion of Honor in 1855 following a successful showing at the Exposition Universelle. Some of his final significant efforts involved completing unfinished works left by his teacher, Revoil, specifically those concerning the history of Pharamond. Genod passed away in Lyon on 24 July 1862.
