A Life Cut Short

Born in Bath in 1715, John Robinson was a man whose professional trajectory was defined by both rapid ascent and an early, quiet departure. He entered the world of art through the tutelage of John Vanderbank, a connection that helped him secure a place among the portrait-painters of his era. His life was marked by a sudden shift in fortune when his marriage brought a significant dowry, allowing him to acquire the house in Cleveland Court previously owned by Charles Jervas. This acquisition was intended to secure a fashionable practice, yet the weight of such a legacy proved difficult to sustain.

The momentum of his career was interrupted by his own mortality. He died in 1745, before he could reach his thirtieth year. His life remains a brief chapter in the history of English portraiture, a period of intense activity that ended before its full potential could be realized.

Technique and Subject Matter

Robinson’s work was characterized by a specific aesthetic preference for the past. He frequently dressed his sitters in the elaborate costumes found in the portraits of Vandyck, seeking to lend his subjects a sense of historical dignity. This stylistic choice suggests an artist preoccupied with the elegance of an earlier age, even as he navigated the social demands of his own time.

His skill as a drawer and painter is most clearly seen in his depictions of the social elite. One notable example is his portrait of Lady Charlotte Finch, a work that achieved a secondary life through the hands of John Faber the Younger. This portrait was engraved in mezzotint, and the resulting print was later titled The Amorous Beauty, reflecting a shift in how his work was perceived by the public after his death.
