Early Life, Family and Artistic Training
John Colin Forbes was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1846. He was the son of Duncan Forbes and Jane Turner. His early years in Toronto included time spent at Upper Canada College, an established local institution. While some accounts suggest he began his training as a self-taught artist, his path eventually led him toward formal instruction in Europe.
During the 1860s, John Colin Forbes traveled to Paris and London to refine his skills. His studies took him to the South Kensington Art School and the Royal Academy in London. These years in Europe provided the technical foundation that would define his later professional life. He moved through these academic environments, absorbing the methods of the time before establishing himself as a painter.
A Prominent Career in Portraiture
Portraiture became the central focus of his professional life. He moved through the art circles of the time, eventually settling in New York to work as a portrait painter. His presence in the Canadian art scene was marked by his involvement in the establishment of formal institutions. In 1872, he was a founding member of the Ontario Society of Artists. Later, in 1880, he joined the group of founding members of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He was also recognized as one of the four provisional members of that same Academy.
His work often captured the likenesses of those in positions of authority. He spent much of his career documenting the faces of political leaders and members of the British royal family. His brushwork was used to create lasting visual records for the institutions that sought to preserve the image of the people shaping the country. He moved between the cultural centers of Europe and the growing public life of Canada, maintaining a steady hand in the study of human character.
Notable Portraits and Royal Commissions
Forbes found his place among the figures who shaped the political landscape of his time. His brush captured the likenesses of several Canadian leaders, including Sir John A. Macdonald and Alexander Mackenzie. He also painted Sir Charles Tupper and John Murray Clark. These subjects were not merely faces to him; they were the men defining a growing nation, and his work provided a visual record of their presence.
His reach extended into the circles of British royalty. He sat with Queen Alexandra and King Edward VII, capturing the likenesses of those who held the highest social standing. This connection to the crown was matched by his work with other significant figures of the era. His gallery of portraits included seven depictions of Gladstone, alongside likenesses of Lord Dufferin and Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman. He also painted Sir Wilfred Laurier, a man whose political life was central to the period.

Key Works and Exhibitions
Early in his career, Forbes showed an interest in the local landscape. His painting of Toronto Bay earned a diploma at the 1866 Provincial Exhibition. This early recognition preceded his later focus on more formal subjects. In 1878, he completed a portrait of Sir Charles Tupper, which remains a significant part of his recorded output.
His presence in major exhibition halls continued well into his later years. In 1906, he exhibited two specific works at the Royal Academy: a portrait of Queen Alexandra and a portrait of Campbell-Bannerman. These selections reflect the high level of professional standing he maintained within the British and Canadian art circles. His ability to secure such placements speaks to the technical skill he brought to his subjects.
Beyond the formal portraits of political and royal figures, his work included varied subject matter. One such piece, Figure amidst the ruins of Persepolis, was executed in oil on canvas. This work shows a departure from the structured environments of his portraiture, moving toward more complex, historical settings.
