Fred Ajanogha, also known as Ajano, is a Nigerian sculptor whose captivating bronze reliefs and public art installations have cemented his place as a prominent figure in contemporary African art. Born in 1958 to Sunday and Rebecca Ajanogha in Benin City, Nigeria—a region steeped in ancient traditions of bronze casting—Ajano’s artistic journey began early, fueled by an innate talent recognized within his family and nurtured through formal education at Creative Art Academy in Benin City under the guidance of Mr. Doran Door. This formative experience instilled a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and inspired him to explore diverse artistic styles. Further broadening his horizons, Ajano spent considerable time studying alongside celebrated Nigerian artists like Felix Idubor and Ben Osawer, absorbing their techniques and philosophies—influences that would profoundly shape his own creative vision. These mentors recognized Ajano’s potential and encouraged him to pursue sculpture as a lifelong vocation. Since embarking on this path, he has traveled extensively across Nigeria, Ghana, and the United States, consistently producing monumental works that celebrate both cultural heritage and artistic innovation. A pivotal moment in Ajano's career arrived in 1996 when he was commissioned by the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) to create over seventy sculptures presented as gifts to visiting dignitaries—a testament to his ability to capture grandeur and commemorate significant events. Notably, he collaborated with Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on a striking relief depicting Maynard Jackson, reflecting Atlanta’s commitment to honoring civil rights history. This piece continues to inspire millions of travelers annually as they navigate the airport's main security screening area. Today, Ajano’s artistic legacy resides primarily in Atlanta, Georgia, where his sculptures adorn locations such as the Atlanta Beltline, Apex Museum, Grady High School, Bessie Branham Park & Recreation Center, and H.J.C. Bowden Senior Facility—spaces that serve as vibrant reminders of his contribution to the city's cultural landscape. His monumental works are permanently displayed at Southern University Museum of Art in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Macon’s Tubman Museum, showcasing his mastery of bronze casting and artistic storytelling. Furthermore, Ajano’s sculptures grace the private collections of influential figures like Jimmy Carter and Maya Angelou, solidifying his reputation as a visionary artist whose work transcends geographical boundaries.
