His early artistic endeavors were rooted in the delicate traditions of flower and bird painting, where he demonstrated a remarkable sensitivity to the subtle details of flora and fauna. However, a pivotal moment of creative evolution occurred when he encountered the groundbreaking works of Zhao Chang. Rather than merely imitating this established master, Yi Yuanji felt a profound call to innovate. He famously resolved to achieve renown by depicting subjects that had not yet been explored by the masters of old. This ambitious declaration set him on a path of rigorous scientific observation and artistic experimentation, transforming him from a skilled painter of blossoms into a pioneer of realistic wildlife art.
To achieve his goal of unprecedented accuracy, Yi Yuanji adopted a method that was as much an expedition as it was an artistic practice. He traveled extensively through the rugged terrains of southern Hubei and northern Hunan, immersing himself in the natural habitats of his intended subjects. The zenith of Yi Yuanji's career was marked by his summons to the imperial court.
