A vessel used to display the consecrated Host for veneration by the faithful, this monstrance in gold bears features of the neoclassical period and is a traditional sun-shaped monstrance, the receptacle being surrounded by a radiant halo, a design evocative of sunrays. The monstrance is adorned with references to Christ’s sacrificial death and resurrection: the lamb sitting on the ‘Book of the Apocalypse’; the mythical phoenix with the power of being reborn from the ashes;the mother pelican feeding her offspring with her own flesh and blood; the ‘Sacrificial Altar’ and the sheaf of wheat and the vine – bread and wine – symbols of Christ’s body and blood.

Autoriaus biografija

A Quiet Voice Amidst Enlightenment Brilliance

Paul Henri Mallet (August 20, 1730 – February 8, 1807) remains a fascinating figure of the eighteenth century, a Genevan writer whose intellectual contributions offer a subtle yet profound glimpse into the shifting currents of the Enlightenment. While his name may not resonate with the thunderous fame of contemporaries like Voltaire or Rousseau, Mallet’s work possesses a quiet, meticulous beauty that captures the essence of an era caught between religious tradition and the dawn of modern historical inquiry. Born into a prominent Genevan family of Huguenot descent—descendants of those who fled Rouen to find sanctuary in Switzerland—Mallet was steeped from birth in the values of humanist scholarship and intellectual rigor.

His early life was defined by the pursuit of classical excellence. After earning his law degree in Geneva in 1751, Mallet’s academic journey took him far beyond the borders of his native city. His career was marked by a series of prestigious appointments that saw him navigating the royal courts and universities of Europe. In 1752, he accepted a professorship of belles lettres at the Academy in Copenhagen, a role that would fundamentally alter the trajectory of his intellectual life. It was in Denmark, his adopted home for many years, that Mallet found his true calling: the exploration of Northern antiquity and the mythologies of the ancient Scandinavian peoples.

The Discovery of Northern Antiquities

Mallet’s most enduring legacy lies in his ability to bridge the gap between forgotten northern legends and the wider European intellectual landscape. His research into the customs, religion, and laws of the ancient Danes was not merely an academic exercise but a romantic reclamation of cultural heritage. In 1755, he published his seminal work, Introduction à l'histoire du Danemark, which explored the religious and social structures of the ancient Danes. This was followed in 1756 by Monuments de la mythologie et de la poesie des Celtes, a work that delved into the poetic traditions of the Scandinavians.

The impact of these writings reached far beyond the Danish borders. When translated into English by Bishop Thomas Percy in 1770 under the title Northern Antiquities, Mallet’s research became a sensation. This publication was particularly significant because it included the first French translation of the medieval Edda, bringing the rich, complex tapestry of Norse mythology to a much broader audience. Through his precise and elegant prose, Mallet allowed the voices of the ancient North to speak to an Enlightenment Europe that was increasingly fascinated by the origins of national identity and the primal forces of myth.

A Life of Scholarly Service and Political Turmoil

Mallet’s scholarly reputation earned him the respect of the highest echelines of European nobility. The King of Denmark, recognizing the value of Mallet's intellect, appointed him as the preceptor to the Crown Prince, a position he held until 1760. His influence even reached the Russian Empire; the Czarina Catherine the Great famously requested that he undertake the education of the heir-apparent, the future Tsar Paul I, though Mallet ultimately declined this monumental responsibility. Instead, he chose a life of more itinerant scholarly pursuit, traveling through Italy with Lord Mountstuart during his Grand Tour.

However, the stability of his academic life was eventually disrupted by the seismic political shifts of the late eighteenth century. A staunch opponent of the French Revolution, Mallet found himself at odds with the radical changes sweeping across Europe. This ideological friction led to a period of profound personal hardship when he was exiled from Switzerland in 1792. Though he was permitted to return to Geneva in 1801, the era of his greatest academic influence had passed. He died in 1807, leaving behind a body of work that serves as a vital link between the classical traditions of the past and the burgeoning historical consciousness of the modern age.
