Martinas Šongaueris, gimęs apie 1450 metus Kolmare (dabartinė Prancūzija), buvo svarbiausia figūra šiaurės renesanso graviūros plėtroje. Jis kilęs iš meistrų šeimos; jo tėvas, Kasparas Šongaueris, buvo auksakalis, kuris apie 1440 metus persikėlė į Kolmarą iš Augsburgo, Vokietijos. Ši šeimyninė aplinka turėjo didelės įtakos Martino ankstyvajai meninei mokymui, nes aukso dirbimo amatas suteikė tvirtą pagrindą tikslioms detalėms ir metalo apdirbimo technikoms – įgūdžiams, tiesiogiai perkeliantiesiems į graviūrą.
